Kautokeino, the host location
Kautokeino or Guovdageaidnu is the county town in the municipality. The population in Kautokeino municipality is approximately 2.900 inhabitants and 80-90 % of the population speaks north Sámi. Kautokeino is located in Finnmark in the north of Norway and is the largest municipality in Norway in terms of area. The natural environment such is rich with natural resources as wildlife, fish, and berries. In the municipality, there are around 10.000 fishing waters and reindeer herding is one of the most important livelihood of this region.
People from different areas of Sápmi and other countries visits Kautokeino, and there is a lot of events that is hold here. In the easter the Sámi Easter-Festival with the Sami grand prix, a joik and singing contest for Sami people. Also World cup finals in reindeer-racing, ice-fishingcontests, snowmobilerace, theaters and are hold in Kautokeino. Duodji has a strong position in Kautokeino and there are several different stores there are several shops with local crafts.
Kautokeino is a place where the Sámi language is to be heard at a daily basis and there is several Sámi institutions is located here. The conference will be held on Diehtosiida. The Sámi University College is located here, and the university college focus on Sámi and Indigenous higher education and research. Sámi Parliament are another of the Sámi institutions that are located on Diehtosiida. |
