In 2014 I travelled to the Sāmi Allaskuvla in search of pedagogical ideas in Sāmi places. I wanted to explore practices and theories connected to the co-construction of culturally meaningful education in Sāpmi. I wanted to learn about the ways in which Sāmi knowledges and practices are being lived in early childhood education. I visited Sāmi kindergartens, spoke with teachers, read books and articles (Balto 2005,2008; Hirvonen 2004; Jannok-Nutti 2013; Keskitalo, Määttä & Uusiautti 2013), and went ptarmigan trapping and reindeer herding with children and teachers. What I learned was the value of lived encounters on the land and the rich potential for pedagogical practice through events with children guided by trappers, and herders in the field, by the river, on the lake and at the farm. By documenting these encounters with photos, video clips and anectodal notes I had ample materials to return to Nunavik, and share the highlights. In this presentation I will consider some of the ideas gathered in Sāpmi and provide evidence of some of the myriad of possibilities and tangible strategies for accessing and living Inuit ways of knowing and being in early childhood education, made possible, through the sharing.
